Alan R. Berger, MDCM, FRCSC, Dip. ABO
Dr. Berger is an assistant professor of Ophthalmology at St. Michael’s Hospital and Vice Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto. After completing his medical training at McGill University, he pursued an internship in internal medicine at Sunnybrook Hospital, followed by 3 years of ophthalmology residency training at U of T, and an 18-month subspecialty fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1989, he joined the U of T Department of Ophthalmology and spent 13 years as an academic full-time vitreoretinal surgeon at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He then assumed the position of ophthalmologist-in-chief at St. Michael’s Hospital from 2002 to 2014. He was chair of Retina Canada in 2004, and the Canadian Surgical Retinal Meetings in both 2005 and 2006, and has served on numerous university and Ministry of Health committees, including the Retinal Quality-Based Procedure Committee. Dr. Berger is the co-founder of the Toronto Retina Institute.
Michael Dollin, MD, FRCSC
Michael Dollin, MD, FRCSC
Dr. Dollin is a vitreoretinal surgeon, Assistant Professor, and faculty member at the University of Ottawa Eye Institute. He received his honours bachelor of science with high distinction and doctor of medicine degrees from the University of Toronto. He completed his internship and residency training in ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa, where he was appointed co-chief resident. During his residency, he was awarded the Department of Ophthalmology Resident Teaching Award, and was twice presented with The Ottawa Hospital Guardian Angel Pin Award. He went on to complete a retina fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, where he was awarded the P. Robb McDonald Award for best fellow research paper at the Wills Eye Hospital Annual Alumni Conference two years in a row. He is currently very active in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and he is an investigator for several multicentre studies involving age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and pathologic myopia?.
Peter J. Kertes, MD, CM, FRCSC

Dr. Kertes majored in molecular biology at Princeton University as an undergraduate and then attended McGill University for medical school. He subsequently pursued a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa and undertook a 2-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. He was in practice in Ottawa from 1997 before moving to the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto in 2003. He is currently a vitreoretinal surgeon and the ophthalmologist-in-chief of the John and Liz Tory Eye Centre at Sunnybrook, is on staff at the Hospital for Sick Children, and is a professor of ophthalmology and vision sciences at U of T. Dr. Kertes has an interest in clinical epidemiology and evidence-based medicine. He has published 3 books on the major clinical trials in ophthalmology that are staples of every resident’s library, and served as editor-in-chief of Evidence-based Ophthalmology. Dr. Kertes has participated in over 20 volunteer projects throughout the developing world, many of them focused on retinopathy of prematurity and pediatric retina.
Wai-Ching Lam, MD, FRCSC

Dr. Lam is professor, vice chair of education, continuing education director, and former residency program director (2001-2013) of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, University of Toronto. He is also the vitreoretinal fellowship director for the University Health Network/Sunnybrook Health Science Centre. He has published over 65 peer-reviewed articles, including articles in medical education, and authored 7 book chapters. Dr. Lam has won numerous teaching awards from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, and the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of the Ontario universities. He is also the recipient of the Ross Fleming Surgical Teaching Award across all surgical specialties of the University Health Network (Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, and Princess Margaret Hospital). His clinical interests are in adult and pediatric vitreoretinal diseases and medical education.

Phil Hooper MD, FRCSC
Dr. Hooper is engaged in full-time academic practice in retina and uveitis at the Ivey Institute, Western University, in London, Ontario. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and co-chaired the Ontario Retina Quality Based Procedures panel.
