Skills transfer courses are intended to provide intensive instruction leading to new knowledge and/or skills. These courses may be either hands-on wet labs or interactive case-based sessions that offer instruction, demonstration and/or discussion of surgical, diagnostic and management techniques, with supervision from an experienced facilitator and a low participant-to-instructor ratio.

PLEASE NOTE: You must register in advance for the skills transfer courses. On-site registration is not permitted. Registration is restricted for some courses. Non-refundable fees apply for some courses.

This session will provide an update in ophthalmology skills and knowledge base through a combination of hands-on and didactic learning.

Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a systematic technique for performing eye examinations
  • Be familiar with the use of the slit lamp and direct ophthalmoscope
  • Recognize serious eye conditions that would require urgent referral in adults and children

Trabeculectomies: tips for success

This course has both didactic and hands-on components. The lab will focus on refining techniques required to perform trabeculectomies.

  • Describe different methods to open and close the conjuctiva
  • Compare the pros and cons of performing a surgical iridectomy
  • Demonstrate proper dissection of the scleral flap and creation of an osteotomy

  • Demonstrate different methods of inserting a tube into the anterior chamber

DMEK for the corneal transplant surgeon: shrinking the learning curve

This hands-on course for corneal transplant surgeons and fellows will introduce the technique, indications for surgery, and management of complications for DMEK. We will be welcoming Dr. Michael Straiko from Devers Eye Institute as a guest faculty for this course.

Advanced course on toric IOL calculations, marking and implantation

Note: this course is being offered twice: at 1330-1500, then again at 1545-1715. Please be sure to register for only one session.

Attendees will use real case examples to select appropriate biometric values for toric IOL calculations and run through a series of calculations. The use of corneal marking systems and toric IOL implantation techniques will be taught.
