wARMD 360° - Evolution of Disease ManagementFriday, March 4, 2016 Netan Choudhry, MD, FRCSC, DABODirector of Vitreoretinal Surgery Dr. Choudhry grew up in Toronto, Ontario and he completed his medical degree at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He subsequently completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania Scheie Eye Institute in Philadelphia. He then went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary Harvard Medical School. Dr. Choudhry is board certified in Canada and the United States. He is active in clinical research with an emphasis in retinal imaging and has published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet and the American Journal of Ophthalmology, among others. Dr. Choudhry is on the board of directors at the American Society of Retina Specialists and is presently the program chair for the Canadian Retina Society. He also works as the Retina section editor of the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and serves as a faculty member at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Harvard Medical School Annual Vitrectomy Course. Dr.Choudhry enjoys teaching students and resident/fellow physicians and is exploring new approaches to education. Dr. Choudhry has worked on the development of remote learning programs for teaching ophthalmology in underserved areas and has actively participated in webinar lectures. He has lectured both nationally in Canada and globally. As a vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr. Choudhry specializes in diseases of the retina and vitreous including: diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retina vein occlusion, retinal detachment among many others. K. Bailey Freund, MDClinical Professor of Ophthalmology Dr. Freund specializes in all retinal disorders including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular diseases and is an expert in difficult-to-diagnose and rare conditions. He has initiated and conducted many clinical trials for treatments for retinal diseases. Dr. Freund is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at New York University School of Medicine, a senior partner at Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York. and an attending surgeon at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Freund is a member of the Retina Society, Macula Society, and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is on the editorial board of the journal Retina and is an associate editor for Retinal Cases & Brief Reports. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and has written numerous book chapters. He has received numerous awards including the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the Macula Society. He is a graduate of Williams College and the New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency training in general ophthalmology and fellowship in medical and surgical retina at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. R. Rishi Gupta, MD, FRCSCAssistant Professor of Ophthalmology Dr. R. Rishi Gupta was born and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland. After attending medical school at the University of Toronto, he did his residency training in ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa. Thereafter, he spent two years at McGill University in Montreal, completing a medical and surgical retina fellowship. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dr. Gupta actively participates in clinical trial research in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. David E. Lederer, MDDr. Lederer is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in the treatment of medical diseases of the retina. He lives in Montreal with his wife and family. Dr. Lederer is an Assistant Professor at McGill University, was the first Director of Teleophthalmology for McGill University and is actively involved with medical student, resident and fellowship education. Dr. Lederer proudly serves as the Chief Executive Officer for EyeCarePD, a professional development start-up providing engaging, convenient and effective content designed to deepen ophthalmic knowledge. Joan W. Miller, MDHenry Willard Williams Professor of Ophthalmology and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School Chief of Ophthalmology, Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Massachusetts General Hospital A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Miller received her MD and ophthalmology residency training at Harvard Medical School. She completed a clinical and research fellowship in vitreoretinal disease at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. An internationally recognized expert on retinal disorders, Dr. Miller is credited with co-developing photodynamic therapy with verteporfin (Visudyne®), the first pharmacologic treatment for age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). She also co-discovered the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in eye disease, and demonstrated the therapeutic potential of VEGF inhibitors, forming the scientific basis of anti-VEGF therapy for neovascular ARMD, diabetic retinopathy, and related conditions. Ongoing investigations include the genetics and metabolomics of ARMD, strategies for early intervention in ARMD, and neuroprotective therapies for retinal disease. Her clinical and scientific innovations have resulted in 11 U.S. patents and 10 international patents to date. Dr. Miller is the first female physician to achieve the rank of Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, the first woman to chair that Department of Ophthalmology, and the first woman to serve as Chief of Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Massachusetts General Hospital. Among Dr. Miller's numerous honours, she is a laureate of the 2014 António Champalimaud Vision Award, the highest distinction in ophthalmology and visual science. In 2015, Dr. Miller became the first woman to receive the Mildred Weisenfeld Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and was inducted into the prestigious National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine). Things you want to knowSaturday, March 5, 2016 David Chow, MDMichael Kapusta, MDWai-Ching Lam, MDDr. Wai-Ching Lam is Professor, Vice Chair of Education, Continuing Education Director, and former Residency Program Director (2001-2013) of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, University of Toronto. He is also the Vitreo-retinal Fellowship Director for the University Health Network/Sunnybrook Health Science Center. He has published over 65 peer-reviewed articles including articles in medical education. He has also authored 7 book chapters. He serves as the reviewer for many journals including: Ophthalmology, Retina, IOVS, etc. He won numerous teaching awards from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, and the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of the Ontario universities. He is also the recipient of the Ross Fleming Surgical Teaching Award across all surgical specialties of the University Health Network (Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, and Princess Margaret Hospital). His clinical interests are in adult and pediatric vitreoretinal diseases and medical education. Hugh Parsons, MD, FRCSC, DABODr. Hugh M. Parsons has been working in British Columbia for the past 26 years whose members include Dr. Simon Lam, Dr. Dhar Dhanda, Dr. Leah Wittenberg and Dr. Steve Levasseur. He is a proud member of Retina Surgical Associates in British Columbia servicing 4 different locations covering the Fraser Valley Region. Hugh, or, as most colleagues and friends call him, "Chip," received his retinal Fellowship in 1989. He is currently the chief of surgery at the Surrey Memorial Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia. Another role is the director of Retina Fellowship Training for Retina Surgical Associates and they are presently hosting two fellows, one from Israel and the second is from the Philippines. Dr. Parsons's passion (aside from his family) is working in the developing world. At this time, he is involved in assisting in the establishment of medical training in Mongolia. This project entails head/neck surgery, thoracic surgery, other specialties and of course ophthalmology training. The project is ongoing and he and his team are working closely with the Mongolian health care group to develop a long-term relationship.
