2016 Canadian Retina Society Meeting Planning Committee
 Netan Choudhry, MD, FRCSC, DABODirector of Vitreoretinal Surgery Dr. Choudhry grew up in Toronto, Ontario and he completed his medical degree at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He subsequently completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania Scheie Eye Institute in Philadelphia. He then went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary Harvard Medical School. Dr. Choudhry is board certified in Canada and the United States. He is active in clinical research with an emphasis in retinal imaging and has published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet and the American Journal of Ophthalmology, among others. Dr. Choudhry is on the board of directors at the American Society of Retina Specialists and is presently the program chair for the Canadian Retina Society. He also works as the Retina section editor of the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and serves as a faculty member at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Harvard Medical School Annual Vitrectomy Course. Dr.Choudhry enjoys teaching students and resident/fellow physicians and is exploring new approaches to education. Dr. Choudhry has worked on the development of remote learning programs for teaching ophthalmology in underserved areas and has actively participated in webinar lectures. He has lectured both nationally in Canada and globally. As a vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr. Choudhry specializes in diseases of the retina and vitreous including: diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retina vein occlusion, retinal detachment among many others.  James Whelan, MDDr. James Whelan graduated with a medical doctorate from Memorial University in Newfoundland. He then undertook his ophthalmology residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia. He worked as a general ophthalmologist in Ontario and Newfoundland. He then went on to do a fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia in medical and surgical diseases of the retina, vitreous and intraocular tumours. Dr. Whelan is currently an assistant professor, and chief of ophthalmology for the Department of Surgery at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is a staff retina surgeon for the Eastern Health Corporation at the Health Science Center and Janeway Child Health Centre in St. John's. He is president of the Canadian Retina Society, and secretary for the Canadian Ophthalmology Society. Deepa Yoganathan, MD, FRCSC, DABODr. Pradeepa Yoganathan was born and raised in Montreal and completed her Bachelor of Science in Physiology at McGill University. She graduated from medical school at Albany Medical College and Residency at the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System in New York, NY. In 2009 she graduated from a 2 year Vitreoretinal Fellowship at the University of Toronto, St Michael's Hospital. Deepa Yoganathan has been practising in both Toronto and Buffalo for 5 years. She was the Director of the Retina Service at the Ross Eye Institute and Assistant Professor at the University at Buffalo. She was awarded Teacher of the Year in her first year of practice. Dr. Yoganathan has since completed the Royal College of Physicians Educators Faculty Development Program to improve Resident Education. Dr. Yoganathan has been invited to lecture at the Cleveland Ophthalmological Society, Case Western University, Sri Lankan Ophthalmology Congress, Vit-Buckle Society, and the National Medical Association three years in a row. She initiated a Visiting Professor series and organized several annual symposia at the University at Buffalo. Dr. Yoganathan was the principal site investigator for the DRCR.net (diabetic retinopathy clinical research network) at the Ross Eye Institute and continues to be a DRCR investigator at Toronto Retina Institute. She is also the principal study investigator for investigator-initiated trials, both funded and pending funding. She has presented her research numerous times at the ASRS, AAO, ARVO, and the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Yoganathan will be graduating from a Masters of Science in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University in 2016. Deepa Yoganathan has a special interest in traumatic retinal detachments and diabetic tractional detachments. Her area of research is in diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, and trauma. She is also interested in volunteering her time, and has completed 2 cataract missions to the Philippines and performed vitreoretinal surgery at Jaffna Teaching Hospital in Sri Lanka.
