Optometry is actively pursuing legislative changes to increase their scope of practice in multiple provinces in Canada. In several provinces they are seeking the authority to administer topical therapeutic drops in the same manner that is permitted in other provinces. The most controversial application has been submitted in Alberta where they are seeking the right to: administer all drugs by all routes, manage glaucoma independently, order MRI and CT scans and ultrasounds, and to perform surgery. The COS response to this initiative will be presented at the Town Hall meeting and general membership input on how best to proceed from here will be sought.
