Dr. Gaurav Shah completed medical school at the University of Illinois, College of Medicine in Chicago. He traveled to Santa Clara, California for internship at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, and was a resident at the University of Minnesota, Department of Ophthalmology for 3 years. His 2 years of fellowship were spent at the renowned Wills Eye Hospital under the direction of Dr. William Benson. Dr. Shah came to The Retina Institute in the summer of 1999, where he not only sees patients in the office, but is also the Director of the Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship Program, participates in Grand Rounds, and various lecture forums. He was voted Ophthalmology Clinical Teacher of the Year for 2001-02.

Dr. Shah has published over 128 articles in ophthalmologic peer-reviewed journals, along with 10 book chapters. He has been involved in over 44 clinical trials since 1999. Dr. Shah has presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialist, the Macula Society, the Retina Society, the Canadian Ophthalmology Society, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology annual meeting and is a member as well. He has also lectured on various topics at several meetings both inside and outside the United States including Asia, South America and Europe. Dr. Shah is a faculty member with Orbis. In 2012, he was a physician with Orbis.

Dr. Shah has received numerous awards, including the Heed Foundation award, Vitreous Society Honor Award and most recently, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement Award. He is currently an investigator in nine clinical trials dealing with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis and AIDS. He serves as a reviewer for Archives of American Journal of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Surgery, Ophthalmology and Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and is also an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
